Family Constellations is a powerful process that reveals hidden issues and inherited generational traumas within a family system. People or objects are used to represent such things as family members, ancestors, events, emotional states, and illness. This method allows one to see and feel what exists beyond a conscious, rational level, providing a very somatic experience that speaks to the heart and soul rather than just the mind.
Family Constellations was developed by German psychotherapist, Bert Hellinger. His influences include his family and Catholic upbringing, his experiences being forced to serve in the German army during World War II, and his missionary work with the Zulu in South Africa. Hellinger’s unique technique evolved as a result of his training with such family therapists and psychologists as Virginia Satir and Milton Erickson. The technique is widely used in Europe, Russia, Asia, and Latin America and is gaining ground in the United States.
An interview is conducted prior to the constellation to clarify the client's specific issue or concern they seek to address. The client may bring up issues such as feeling stuck, financial challenges, relationship problems, anxiety, depression, or illness. During the interview, questions about the client's family history are asked, and a genogram—a visual representation of their family tree—is created to identify any patterns or dynamics that may be impacting their current situation. Together, we decide which elements of the issue will be represented during the constellation session.
The constellation begins when you place these physical representations in a space, or field. Objects are used In an individual session, whereas in a group session, people are chosen by the client to represent the elements. By observing the movements and interactions of these elements, you can gain valuable insights into your family dynamics and new perspectives on how your past experiences have impacted your present. A session typically ends when a sense of closure, understanding, or emotional release is felt by the client.
We often feel stuck in our lives because we are unconsciously entangled with a family member, even from generations past, out of blind love and loyalty. We may carry similar traits and experiences of a forgotten or excluded family member. A Family Constellation session can bring this to light and allow us to disconnect from that loyalty, releasing us from that burden yet connecting us through love. This restoration of love and harmony in one’s family system is the ultimate goal of Family Constellations.
A Family Constellation will not resolve all of your issues, but it can certainly unpeel one of many layers. The process is gentle yet strong, healing and ongoing. As a facilitator, I search for ONE shift in your family dynamic that will help you take the next step in your life. The impact often begins immediately and can steadily unfold in your life for up to 2 years.
